주말에는 가족들과 함께 볼 만한 영화를 찾아보는 편이다.
이 영화는 지난주 기준 넷플릭스 북미 순위 1위를 달리고 있는 작품이다. 잔혹한 범죄자나 살인자의 이야기가 주류를 이루는 넷플릭스 판에서, 북미 차트를 살펴보면 의외로 이런 비교적 건전하고 가족적인 내용을 다루는 영화들이 상위권에 자주 랭크되는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 아무래도 날씨가 쌀쌀해지는 주말 저녁이면 온 가족이 모여 '무비 나잇(Movie Night)'을 즐기는 문화가 일상으로 자리 잡았기 때문이 아닐까 싶다.
영화는 실화를 바탕으로 제작되었는데, 솔직히 일부러 시간을 내어 꼭 챙겨보라고 권하기는 조금 망설여지는 작품이다.
우리 아내는 잔인하거나 무서운 장면을 전혀 보지 못하고, 아기에게 그런 장면을 노출하는 것도 극도로 꺼리기 때문에 내가 고를 수 있는 가족 영화의 선택지는 좁아질 수밖에 없다. 문화예술에 대한 검열이 상상력의 폭을 얼마나 제한하는지 실감하게 되는 생활 속 사례랄까...
그래도 나와 비슷한 상황에서 주말에 가족들과 둘러앉아 부담 없이 볼 영화를 찾는다면, 킬링타임용으로 나쁘지 않은 선택이다.
On weekends, I usually look for movies that our whole family can enjoy together.
This film was ranked #1 on Netflix North America as of last week. In a Netflix landscape largely dominated by true crime and serial killer stories, you often see relatively wholesome, family-friendly titles climbing to the top of the North American charts. I suspect it is because gathering together for a cozy "movie night" as the weather turns chilly on weekends has become an established family ritual.
The movie is based on a true story, but to be completely honest, it is hard to wholeheartedly recommend setting aside dedicated time just to watch it.
My wife cannot stand cruel or scary scenes, and she is extremely cautious about exposing our baby to anything frightening. Naturally, the pool of family movies I can pick from is narrowed down considerably. You might say it is a vivid everyday example of how censorship in arts and culture severely restricts the scope of imagination...
Still, if you find yourself in a similar situation and need a film to watch with your family over the weekend, it is not a bad choice.
